How long does numbness last after a root canal?

Usually a few hours. Local anesthetic wears off gradually, and the soft tissue numbness in your lip, cheek and tongue lasts noticeably longer than numbness of the tooth itself. Lower teeth typically stay numb longer than upper teeth because the injection blocks the whole nerve to that side of the jaw. Do not eat until it has fully cleared. Numbness that persists past the same day, or into the next day, should be reported.

What to expect, step by step
Complete numbness of the tooth, gum, lip and often the tongue on that side.
What to do: Nothing to eat or drink hot for the first hour. Do not test the numb lip by biting it.
The tooth wakes up first. The lip and cheek still feel thick and foreign.
What to do: Still no eating. Sip room temperature water if needed.
Sensation returning in patches, often with a tingling or pins and needles feeling as it comes back.

Why the lip stays numb after the tooth has woken up
This surprises people every time. The nerve fibres that carry sensation from soft tissue and those that carry it from the tooth pulp recover at different rates, so soft tissue anesthesia routinely outlasts pulpal anesthesia by a significant margin.
That mismatch is exactly why the eating advice is worded the way it is. Your tooth might feel ready long before your cheek is safe from being chewed. The AAE says not to eat until the numbness is completely gone, and the lip is the part to test.
Why lower teeth stay numb longer
Upper teeth are usually numbed by infiltration: the anesthetic soaks through relatively porous bone to reach the nerve at that individual tooth. That wears off relatively quickly and affects a small area.
Lower back teeth generally need an inferior alveolar nerve block, where the anesthetic is placed against the main nerve trunk before it enters the jaw. That numbs the whole side of the lower jaw, half the tongue and the lower lip, and it takes longer to wear off. If you had a lower molar root canal and your chin still feels odd four hours later, that is the ordinary picture.
Speeding it up, and what not to do
Time is the main answer. Gentle activity and staying hydrated help circulation, which is what clears the anesthetic. Some offices can give a reversal agent for soft tissue anesthesia in specific circumstances, which is a question for them, not something to seek out routinely.
What not to do matters more. Do not chew to test it, do not drink anything hot, and do not keep prodding the numb area. The commonest complication of dental numbness is a self inflicted lip or cheek bite, and it produces a painful ulcer that people then blame on the root canal.

For a lower jaw block, yes, that is within the usual range. Note whether it is improving. Numbness that is fading slowly is different from numbness that has not changed at all.

After that you can eat, but chew on the opposite side and keep to soft food for a day or two. The bigger rule lasts longer: avoid biting on the treated tooth until it has its permanent filling or crown, because a temporary filling is not built to take chewing force.
For the first hour, do not chew, do not drink hot or cold liquids, and do not smoke. Then wait until the numbness has completely gone before eating anything, so you do not bite your lip or cheek. After that, eat soft food on the opposite side, brush and floss as usual but gently around the treated tooth, and stay off the treated tooth entirely until it has its permanent crown or filling.
Most people can. With local anesthetic only, a root canal leaves you numb but not impaired, and there is no standard instruction to take time off. The realistic constraints are the first few hours, when a numb lip makes speaking and eating awkward, and any sedation, which rules out driving and working that day. Book the appointment for later in the day if your job involves a lot of talking or client contact.
Skip hot and cold drinks for the first hour, which is the AAE's explicit instruction, then wait until the numbness has fully cleared before drinking anything hot so you do not scald a mouth that cannot feel it. That usually means coffee is fine later the same day. Alcohol is a different question: it depends on what pain medication you were given, so ask your endodontist or pharmacist rather than guessing.
